An Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is an entry requirement for visa-exempt foreign nationals traveling to Canada by air. It is electronically linked to the traveller’s passport and is valid for up to five years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. Here’s a summary of who needs an eTA and who is exempt:
Who Needs an eTA:
Visa-exempt foreign nationals travelling to Canada by air (not needed for land, bus, train, or boat travel).
Certain citizens from visa-required countries who may be eligible for an eTA instead of a visa for air travel (but need a visa for land or sea entry).
Who Does Not Need an eTA:
Canadian citizens (including dual citizens) – travel with a Canadian passport.
Canadian permanent residents – travel with a PR card or permanent resident travel document.
U.S. citizens – exempt from eTA; need a valid U.S. passport.
Lawful permanent residents of the U.S. – exempt if they carry valid status documentation and a passport from their country of nationality.
An eTA does not guarantee entry to Canada. Upon arrival, a border services officer will determine eligibility for entry.
