Current Employment

When you apply and while your application is being reviewed by the AAIP, you must:

• – Be living and working in Alberta in an eligible job with an approved employer in the tourism and hospitality industry.
• – Have a valid work permit that is based on one of the following:
• – A positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) for an approved occupation.
• – Temporary special measures from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for individuals affected by wildfires.

Important Note: “Maintained status” is not considered a valid work permit. Other types of work permits will not be accepted when submitting your application.

List of Eligible Occupations

Work Experience

When you submit your application and as the AAIP reviews it, you must have:

• – Worked full-time (at least 30 hours per week) for a minimum of 6 consecutive months (or 780 hours) with an approved employer in the tourism and hospitality sector, in one of the eligible occupations.
•  

Work experience must meet these conditions:

• – It must be with the same employer who is offering you the current job in Alberta.
• – You must have been paid for the work.
• – If you completed the work in Alberta or Canada, it must have been authorized by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), and you must have had valid temporary resident status during that time.

Job Offer or Employment Contract

When you submit your application and during the review process, you must meet the following conditions:

• – You must have a full-time job offer or employment contract for an eligible job in Alberta from your current employer.- 
• – You need to have worked for your current employer for at least 6 consecutive months (780 hours).
• – Your job offers and employer in Alberta must meet all the requirements set by the Alberta government.
• – It’s your responsibility to work with your employer to make sure all the employer requirements are fulfilled.

Important Note: If these requirements are not met, your application will be declined.

Language Requirements

When you submit your application, you must show that you meet the following language test scores:

• – A minimum score of 4 in each English language skill, or
• – A minimum score of 4 in each French language skill.

You must provide official test results from one of these accepted language tests:

• – CELPIP General Test (Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program)
• – IELTS General Training Test (International English Language Testing System)
• – TEF Canada (Test d’évaluation de français)
• – TCF Canada (Test de connaissance du français)

Important Notes:

• – The test results must be less than 2 years old at the time you submit your application.
• – The date used to check if your results are valid is the date you took the test, not when you received the results.
• – The AAIP will not accept proof of registration for a language test in place of actual test results.

Education Requirements

When you submit your application, you must have completed at least a high school education equivalent to Canadian standards.

You are required to provide an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) from an IRCC-designated organization for your highest level of education.

However, you do not need to submit an ECA if:

1. You hold a Canadian degree, diploma, or certificate from a recognized Canadian post-secondary institution, technical college, or secondary school listed in the Directory of Educational Institutions in Canada, or
2. You possess a valid Alberta Qualification Certificate, or a trade certificate recognized by Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT).

The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) may request an ECA from or conduct an internal assessment to verify that the candidate meets the minimum Canadian high school equivalent requirement.
