Apply for a passport for Child

A Canadian passport is a travel document available to Canadian citizens.

A child passport is valid for up to 5 years. It remains valid until the expiration date, even after the child turns 16. Child passports cannot be renewed. Once the child turns 16, they must apply for an adult passport.

Until then, a new child passport must be applied for once the current one expires. Children aged 15 and under do not need a passport to enter the United States or return to Canada by land or sea.

Alternative Documents to a Passport:

• Original or copy of the child’s birth certificate, issued by the vital statistics department of their birth province or territory.
• Original Canadian citizenship certificate.
• Canadian citizenship card.

When the child turns 16, a passport will be required to enter the U.S.

Who Can Apply for a Child Passport
To apply for a child passport, you must be one of the following:

• A parent of the child (if you’re not separated or divorced).
• The parent with custody or decision-making responsibilities over the child (if you are separated or divorced).
• The child’s legal guardian (you must provide legal documents proving your guardianship).

All parents or legal guardians should sign the application form.

If Any Parents or Legal Guardians Are Deceased,
You’ll need to submit the original death certificate(s) or an official copy issued by:

• A provincial or territorial vital statistics office, or
• An equivalent office if outside of Canada.

A statement of death from a funeral home is not accepted.

General Document Checklist for child’s Canadian Passport

• Proof of the child’s Canadian citizenship

A long-form birth certificate from the Canadian province or territory where the child was born, or a Canadian citizenship certificate.

• If you have a paper citizenship certificate, it must be the original (not a photocopy).
• If you have a citizenship e-certificate, include a printed copy.
• The name on the proof of citizenship will appear on the passport.
• Proof of parentage or legal guardianship
• Proof of parentage is required with every child passport application.
• Include all documents related to custody, decision-making responsibilities, access, parenting time, or mobility of the child, such as divorce judgments or orders.
• Any valid Canadian passport or other travel documents issued in the child’s name.
• Two identical passport photos of the child
  • The back of one photo must include:
  • The photographer’s name, complete address of the studio, and the date the photo was taken (either handwritten or stamped). Stick-on labels are not accepted.
  • Your guarantor must also sign the back of this photo.
• Document Language Requirements: All documents must be in English or French. If any document is in another language, an official translation must be provided.

Find a Guarantor:

• A guarantor is needed to sign:
  • Your child’s passport application.
  • One of the two passport photos.
• The guarantor must:
  • Have known you personally for at least 2 years.
  • Be familiar with the child.

Submit your application:

• You can schedule an appointment online.
• If you don’t have an appointment, you can still receive walk-in services at a Service Canada Centre or a passport office.

Pay your fees:

• Child Passport: $57

Additional Fees

• Standard pickup (after 10 business days): $20
• Replacing a lost or stolen passport: $45
• File transfer (to another passport office within Canada): $45

Get your Passport:

When your passport is processed, it will be mailed to you unless you paid for pick-up service. Mail time is usually 5 business days, but it can vary across the country.

Apply for a new adult passport

General Document Checklist for new adult Canadian Passport: You will need to provide all of the following:

• Proof of Canadian Citizenship
  • This can be a birth certificate or citizenship certificate.
  • If you have a paper certificate, it must be the original document (no photocopies).
  • If you have an e-certificate, include a printed copy.
• A Document to Support Your Identity
  • This can be either the original or a photocopy.
  • If using a photocopy, ensure both sides are shown and that it is signed and dated by your guarantor or a signing official.
• Two Identical Passport Photos
• A Guarantor
• Two References
• Valid Canadian Passport or Other Travel Document (if Applicable)

Passport Photo Requirements

On the back of one of your passport photos, the photographer must write or stamp:

• The name of their studio or company
• The complete address of the studio
• The date the photo was taken
• Your guarantor must also sign one of your photos.

What Your Guarantor Needs to Do and Who Can Be a Guarantor
Your guarantor must sign:

• Your passport application form
• One of your passport photos
• All copies of your supporting identity documents (ID)

Guarantor Eligibility:

• They must be at least 18 years old
• They must have known you for at least 2 years
• They must be a Canadian citizen
• They must hold a valid 5-year or 10-year Canadian passport that, at the time of your application, is:
• Expired for no more than 1 year, or
• Valid (not expired, damaged, inaccessible, suspended, revoked, reported lost or stolen, found and returned, destroyed, or requested for return)
• They must have been at least 16 years old when they applied for their passport
• They must provide necessary information from their passport on your application form
• They must be reachable in case we need to contact them

Who Can Be a Reference for You
Your references must:

• Be at least 18 years old
• Have known you for at least 2 years
• Agree to have their name and contact information used on your application

To avoid delays, ensure your references are available if we need to contact them. For example, they shouldn’t be traveling abroad. If they are in a different time zone, it may take longer to reach them, which could delay your application.

We may request additional references at any time.

Who Can’t Be a Reference for You
Your references cannot be:

• Your guarantor
• A member of your immediate family
• Your spouse or common-law partner
• Your child or grandchild
• Other extended family members

Full List of People Who Can’t Be a Reference
The following individuals cannot serve as a reference for your passport renewal application:

• Spouse or Common-law Partner
• Parent, stepparent, foster parent, or a parent’s spouse or common-law partner
• Mother-in-law or father-in-law
• Child (biological, adopted, foster, or stepchild) or your child’s spouse or common-law partner
• Son-in-law or daughter-in-law
• Sibling (brother, half-brother, stepbrother, sister, half-sister, or stepsister) or your sibling ‘spouse or common-law partner
• Brother-in-law or sister-in-law
• Grandparent (biological, adopted, step, or foster grandparent) or your grandparent’s spouse or common-law partner
• Grandmother-in-law or grandfather-in-law
• Grandchild (biological, adopted, step, or foster grandchild) or your grandchild’s spouse or common-law partner
• Grandson-in-law or granddaughter-in-law
• Other Close Relatives Living with You
