Introduction
Each year, thousands of people acquire Canadian Citizenship and make Canada bigger and stronger. Canadian citizenship can be acquired by right of birth or by naturalization. It gives the right to people to participate in Canadian election as well as to secure high security jobs. Canadian citizens do not need to renounce their foreign citizenship because it is legal to keep dual or multiple citizenship in Canada; however, they might have to renounce their foreign citizenship due to the citizenship laws in their foreign country of citizenship.
Avenues to acquire Canadian Citizenship
By Birth: Every person, who is born in Canada, is a Canadian citizen at birth. However, it doesn’t apply to children born to diplomats.
Adopted Children by Canadian Citizen: Children adopted by Canadian citizens are eligible to acquire Canadian citizenship. Also, people who are at least 18 years of age or older may acquire citizenship if they were adopted by a Canadian citizen, and there was a genuine parent-child relationship before attaining the age of 18 years.
Born outside of Canada to a Canadian parent: Every person is a Canadian citizen who is born outside of Canada to a Canadian parent. However, the Canadian parent should not had acquired citizenship by born outside Canada to a Canadian citizen. This rule only allows to obtain citizenship to the first generation born outside Canada. But there is an exception for children/grandchildren born outside Canada to the parents/grandparents who were employed outside Canada in Canadian armed forces, the federal public administration, or the public service of province.
Naturalization: A Canadian permanent resident can apply for citizenship by fulfilling the requirements set out in Canadian Citizenship Act. To be eligible, they must:
- Be a permanent resident and physically present in Canada for at least 3 years (1095 days) within the last five years before the date of application.
- Have filed income tax for 3 years within the 5 years.
- Meet the language requirement of CLB 4 in speaking and listening.
- Pass a citizenship exam.
