Permanent Resident Card Renewal

A Permanent Resident Card is a valid travel document and legal proof that the person is a permanent resident of Canada. The IRCC issues a PR card to every individual who receives a permanent residence status in Canada. PR cards are usually valid for 5 years hence need to be renewed every five years. Permanent residents do not lose status if the PR card expires. However, they must have a valid PR card if they want to travel to Canada through a commercial vehicle. A permanent resident must meet the following requirements to renew a PR card:

• A permanent resident of Canada.
• Physically present for at least 2 years (730 days) during the last 5 years.
• Must not be under an effective removal order.
• Submit an application to renew a PR card within Canada

You can still travel to Canada if you have an expired PR Card. You must apply for a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) at a Visa Application Centre (VAC), and the visa office will issue a PRTD counterfoil in your passport. The PRTD is a valid travel document to enter Canada.
